Example: AI-supported Quantity Determination in Building Construction
AI-supported quantity determination represents a possible use case for artificial intelligence in building construction. This example illustrates how digital processes can support the recording and evaluation of quantities from BIM models. The focus is on the basic functionality and practical benefits, without claiming to provide a complete or universally valid overview.
Concept development and definition
A general contractor wants to speed up quantity determination from IFC models, as the manual effort involved is high and prone to errors. In a workshop with thinkBIC, the goal is defined: an AI solution that automatically extracts quantities from digital building models.
Data collection and data curation
The standard documents available in the company are systematically reviewed and analyzed. The findings obtained are
then directly incorporated into the development process. At the same time, the existing database is cleaned up.
Modeling and development
Existing IFC models and data are checked for completeness, standard references, and quantity specifications. Based on this, thinkBIC develops an AI module that accurately answers questions such as “How many steel columns does the ground floor have?”
Scaling and implementation
Following successful pilot runs, the solution is seamlessly integrated into the existing process and enables the
automated output of quantity results.
The data flows directly into subsequent processes, such as purchasing, and can now be used in a standardized manner.
